When Salt Is NOT A Sin

Contrary to popular belief, hypertension does not strike only men and women in their 40s. Statistics at the Department of Health claim that 1 of 10 Filipinos aged 15 and above has hypertension, while a 2004 National Nutrition and Health Survey reports that 4 of 10 Filipinos aged 20-29 are pre-hypertensive and require a lifestyle change to prevent progression to hypertension.

Medical experts and evidence-based science have shown that too much salt is harmful to humans as it increases the risk of developing high blood pressure and its complications, such as strokes, heart attacks, kidney damage, and possibly asthma and some cancers. The culprit has been identified as sodium chloride, which the human body needs only in small doses and which is the main stuff of common salt.

While the good news is cutting back on salt may help keep blood pressure levels on the healthy range, salt as a widely used flavoring agent is hard to replace. The bad news is that the low-sodium products, which had been brought to the market in the last several years have disappointed consumers, not least because of their bitter and metallic aftertaste.

There’s a good chance, however, that the search for the healthier salt alternative has come to an end for Filipino health buffs and those on special dietary regimens. PANSALT®, the healthier salt rich in the essential minerals magnesium and potassium, is now available locally. PANSALT® cuts sodium chloride to 56-57 percent while maintaining the same savory flavor of common salt. Its unique and patented formula is the product of years of research and study by Finnish health experts. It has further been found to remarkably improve the therapeutic effects of treatment drugs for hypertension.

Because it has found great consumer acceptance, PANSALT® is already being used in more than a thousand food products from hundreds of manufacturers across the world. PANSALT® is being used in prepared meat products and processed food; prepared fish, dairy, hamburger, and bakery products; snack food; seasonings; and flour mixtures. In Finland, PANSALT® has been in use for over 20 years and it has significantly contributed to the country's heart health.

Imported by Accord International, Inc., PANSALT® is now available in leading supermarkets and selected Mercury drugstores nationwide.
